　　At first, I started to know Xiuwu because of Yuntai Mountain, the famous tourist spot located in Central China. In the late 1990s, it showed up everyday in the weather report on CCTV. Then if you are looking for Yuntai Mountain on a map, you will find a small town contiguous to Yuntai Mountain with a quaint name--Xiuwu.

　　最早知道修武，是因?yàn)樵婆_(tái)山，這個(gè)位于中原地帶的著名自然風(fēng)景區(qū)，在上世紀(jì)90年代末，每天都會(huì)在央視《新聞聯(lián)播》后的天氣預(yù)報(bào)中亮相。如果從政區(qū)地圖中尋找云臺(tái)山，會(huì)發(fā)現(xiàn)一個(gè)緊鄰的，名字中就帶著古意的小城—修武。

　　First Emperor of Qin, he set up 36 counties, Xiuwu belonged to one of them. The name has remained unchanged for over 2000 years. During the Wei and Jin dynasties, when Ji Kang and Ruan Ji withdrew from society to Xiuwu, another five scholars with reputation including Liu Ling, Shan Tao, Wang Rong ,Ruan Xian and Xiang Xiu were also attracted there to the deep Bamboo forests, drinking and composing. They are honoured as "seven sages of the bamboo grove" .That place was then idle and isolated, immersed in a literary atmosphere. Xiuwu was later pilgrimed by upright cultivated personages of every dynasty.

　　與中國很多旅游城市一樣，修武也是一個(gè)有故事的地方。譬如此地周代之前稱“寧邑”，武王伐紂時(shí)在此處駐兵練武，改名為“修武”。秦始皇統(tǒng)一中國后，在全國設(shè)立36個(gè)郡(后增至46個(gè))，修武縣便隸屬其中之一的三川郡，歷經(jīng)2000多年從未改名。及至魏晉，嵇康、阮籍在此間避世，引來劉伶、王戎、阮咸、山濤、向秀等另五位當(dāng)時(shí)名士在此間竹林中賦詩對(duì)飲，并稱“竹林七賢”。一時(shí)間清風(fēng)霽月，文氣沖天，成就此后歷朝歷代清流文士的朝圣之地。

　　The county is not big, but my first impression is that it is incredibly clean. As a tourist city, tourism is the first important income, so keeping it clean is common sense for the government. What amazed me more however, was, although it is less than 50 minutes drive from Xinzheng Airport the sky over my head changed from grey to blue. Such weather can not even be seen that frequently in southern China.

　　修武縣城不大，給人的第一感受是干凈。作為一座以旅游為第一收入來源的城市，保持市容的整潔是政府常識(shí)，這并沒有讓我感到意外。真正讓我驚訝的是，我們到達(dá)這里時(shí)，雖然離新鄭機(jī)場不過50分鐘的車程，頭頂?shù)奶炜諈s從灰蒙蒙換成了湛藍(lán)，這樣的天氣，即便是在南方，也并不多見。

　　The second feeling I got is peace. We arrived at around 5 o'clock in the afternoon on Friday, which was right in rush hour in a big city. But in a city with a little more than 270 thousand people, the crowds and traffic jams, as I imagine them, didn’t exist. What we were faced with were some joggers in sportswear, brushing against me. I assumed they were tourists like me, not local, until one of them greeted our guide in the local dialect.

　　第二個(gè)感覺是安靜。我們到達(dá)時(shí)間是周五的下午5點(diǎn)多，在大城市中這正是下班高峰，但在這個(gè)人口只有27萬出頭的縣城里，預(yù)想中的人潮與車流卻并不存在。迎面而來，與我們擦肩而過的，多是一身運(yùn)動(dòng)裝備的慢跑者，我甚至懷疑他們其實(shí)和我們一樣，并非本地居民，直到陪伴我們的當(dāng)?shù)叵驅(qū)в帽镜胤窖耘c其中的一位熱情地打起了招呼。

　　Yuntai Mountain is a must-see, since we were there, we were not going to miss it. As it was off-season there were only a few self-driving tourists from neighboring provinces. With so few people I was able to take in the unique, natural magnificence of the view at my own pace

　　云臺(tái)山是修武的必游之地，既然來了固然不能錯(cuò)過。即便是旅游淡季，各個(gè)景點(diǎn)中也能看到不少來自周邊省份和城市的自駕旅游者。當(dāng)然，擦肩接踵的景象不會(huì)出現(xiàn)，這讓我得以更加悠然地觀賞這里獨(dú)特奇麗的自然景觀。

　　The drastic lifting evoked by movements of the Earth's crust and undercutting by water erosion millions of years ago, as well as the abundant water resources there has formed the natural view of two cliffs facing each other and the perennial waterfalls, springs, brooks and ponds. When I took a walk along the zigzag paths up the hill, the towering walls and the huge rocks always produced a natural visual screen in front of me.One moment it was a winding path leading to a secluded spot, and the next moment it was open and clear after a turning, with a flourish and wide field ahead like in Shangri-La. A cool spring from nowhere converged to a deep green pond at my feet, which felt so kindly and intimate.

　　在這里，遠(yuǎn)古時(shí)期地殼的強(qiáng)烈抬升和水蝕下切，加上當(dāng)?shù)厮簇S富的地理特點(diǎn)，形成了雙崖對(duì)峙的峽谷群和各種常年不竭的瀑、泉、溪、潭。漫步在蜿蜒曲折的山谷之中，高聳的山壁和巨大的巖石往往會(huì)在人眼前形成天然的視覺屏障。這一刻還是曲徑通幽，下一刻只不過拐了個(gè)彎，眼前便豁然開朗，進(jìn)入一片植被茂盛的開闊谷地，仿佛偶遇世外桃源。更有不知從哪里突然冒出的清冽泉水，在腳下匯成碧綠的深潭，讓人心生親近之意。

　　Such views that are like a naturally formed garden constructed with marvellous ideas and concepts, it's no wonder that Ji Kang, who is regarded as the originator of Chinese landscape garden design, and his friends lived nearby for more than 20 years. There are many wild and undisciplined scholars in the Wei and Jin Dynasties. Maybe Ji Kang at that time once set his ancient Chinese zither and played Guang Ling San wholeheartedly and passionately to relieve his depression.

　　如此山水，猶如一座座布局巧妙的天然園林，無怪乎有中國山水園林文化鼻祖之稱的竹林七賢，會(huì)選在附近隱居，一住就是20多年。魏晉文人多狂士，遙想嵇康當(dāng)年，或許也曾在這山谷中寒潭畔，架起古琴，袒胸露懷縱情狂奏一曲《廣陵散》，一舒心中的郁結(jié)之氣。

　　The art of Xiuwu is neither too close to the capital, nor is it too far away to be considered isolated. By keeping a comfortable distance from the madding crowd, it waits patiently for those looking for peace of mind.

　　不似廟堂之高，亦不似江湖之遠(yuǎn)，像一枚藏于河洛之間、太行腳下的璞玉，恬然生長，靜待世人的偶遇。

Q: Why did the "seven sages of bamboo grove"choose Xiuwu as their place of seclusion?

問：為什么竹林七賢會(huì)選擇到修武隱居?

A: Xiuwu is close to both Luoyang and Xuchang, the capital and second capital of the country at the time, which made it convenient for the sages to stay up-to-date with current affairs.In addition, Jia Kang and Wang Rong (two main member of seven sages of bamboo grove) came from notable families that possessed land in the area. Unlike poet Tao Yuanming, who quit his official position and lived a peaceful life in the countryside, the "seven sages" retreated to avoid the dangerous political situation in the capital city.

答：首先，這里靠近陪都許昌和京都洛陽，且嵇康的妻子長樂亭公主、王戎在此皆有封地。山濤和向秀的家也在距此幾十里的懷縣。與陶淵明不一樣的是，竹林七賢并非想完全出世。

Instead of fighting against the current, they chose to stay somewhere safe, where they could maintain their peace of mind, whilst expressing their anguish via poems and songs. The quiet and beautiful environment in Xiuwu surely was another reason for them to come. Also, they could find all kinds of herbs that they needed to invent the pills that they believed would help them achieve immortality.

他們表面上遠(yuǎn)離官場，實(shí)際上仍然憂心政治無奈當(dāng)時(shí)政治環(huán)境兇險(xiǎn)，唯有選擇在離政治中心不遠(yuǎn)的地方隱居，用詩曲宣泄苦悶與憂生之嗟。其次，修武環(huán)境清幽，竹林廣袤，云臺(tái)山上有很多藥草，是很多修道煉丹之人聚集地，所以，非常適合修道談玄。

Q: What made Xiuwu the centre of porcelain making in the past?

問：修武為什么能夠成為當(dāng)時(shí)的瓷都?

A：In the Northern Song Dynasty, Xiuwu became the porcelain manufacturing centre. The area was apt for three reasons: its suitable porcelain clay7 convenient water transport network, and its extensive history of pottery making. Xiuwu is one of the birthplaces of Chinese porcelain. Ning Fengzi, the first pottery minister in China's history was born in Xiuwu, during the Emperor Huang dynasty.

答：北宋時(shí)，修武成為中原地帶的重要瓷都，一萬面因瓷土豐富、水運(yùn)網(wǎng)絡(luò)發(fā)達(dá)，另一方面是因?yàn)樾尬溆兄凭玫闹铺諝v史。黃帝時(shí)期，中國歷史上第一任陶正(制陶官)寧封子便生于修武。

With his influence, Xiuwu came up with plenty of skilled potters, who formed a complete industry chain with the local Dangyangyu kiln. They invented porcelains with solid clay body and a shiny glaze. Meanwhile, Xiuwu was close to the political centre at that time.A lot of masterpieces produced in Xiuwu had been sent to the imperial palace. This is also why Dangyangyu porcelain offers an accurate taste of the royal class in Northern Song Dynasty.

在他的影響下，當(dāng)?shù)爻隽撕芏嗉妓嚫叱墓そ场Ｐ尬洚?dāng)陽峪窯在此地形成產(chǎn)業(yè)，發(fā)展出胎質(zhì)細(xì)密堅(jiān)硬，釉色油潤光亮的絞胎瓷，可以說是我國陶瓷文化的根源所在。其次，它離當(dāng)時(shí)的政治中心近，多數(shù)出品運(yùn)進(jìn)皇宮，也代表和引領(lǐng)那個(gè)時(shí)代對(duì)瓷器的審美喜好。

　　Chinese are good as diet therapy for a long time. In recent years, with the economic development, people are getting richer. Adding medicine into our daily diet and improving the health with food has been a trend.

　　中國人一貫擅長食療。近年來，隨著經(jīng)濟(jì)的發(fā)展，人民的富裕，以藥入肴、以食養(yǎng)生再度成為一種大勢(shì)。

　　Since Zhou Dynasty, Huai medicine has been the tribute, and Xiuwu has been mentioned in some medical books through the ages. The customs and dietary habits in Xiuwu just fulfill the need of this trend.

　　而從周朝就開始進(jìn)貢懷藥、歷代醫(yī)書中都常常提到的修武，它的民風(fēng)食俗正恰恰好地切中了這股潮流趨勢(shì)的需要。

The chrysanthemum in Xiuwu, also called Huai chrysanthemum, is very famous. It is together with yam, rehmannia and achyranthis renowned as Four Major Huai Drugs and it was listed as a tribute from Zhou Dynasty to Qing Dynasty. Huai chrysanthemum is also recorded into all kinds of Chinese medical books, including Compendium of Materia Medica, Sheng Nong's Herbal Classic and so on.

修武的菊花好，被稱為懷菊花，與懷山藥、懷地黃、懷牛膝并稱為“四大懷藥”，從周朝一直到清代都被列為貢品，也被載入中國的各種醫(yī)藥名書，例如《本草綱目》《神農(nóng)本草經(jīng)》等。

Xiuwu is know as the county of longevity, where the number of centenarians tops the list all over the country. Perhaps it has something to do with the healthy food ingredients and the dietary customs in this area.

修武號(hào)稱長壽縣，百歲老人占比位居全國前列，大概也與此地這樣養(yǎng)生的食材與食俗有關(guān)。

　　The Yuntai Mountain features twelve major tourist scenes, supported by its magnificent canyon landscapes and changeable water features as well as an abundant forest resource at a coverage are as high as 93%. The negative oxide ions in the air are a dozen times denser than the clean air standard promoted by the UNESCO.

　　以太行山岳豐富水景為特色，以峽谷類地質(zhì)地貌景觀和悠久歷史文化為內(nèi)涵，包含十二大景點(diǎn)，森林覆蓋率達(dá)到93%以上，負(fù)氧離子含量超過聯(lián)合國教科文組織規(guī)定的“清新空氣”標(biāo)準(zhǔn)數(shù)十倍。

　　The Red Canyon. 紅石峽

　　The Red Canyon is famous as a miniature of everything, the spring, the waterfall, the brook, the pool, and the strange, straight cliffs. It is like a mini land of the great nature handcrafted by gods.

　　集泉、瀑、溪、潭于一谷，素來享有“盆景峽谷”的美譽(yù)。兩岸峭壁山石秀麗，仿佛鬼斧神工雕鑿而成的一個(gè)巨大盆景，又似名山大川的濃縮。

　　The Rock of A Hundred Houses. 百家?guī)r

　　It is said that Liu Xie, Emperor Xian of the Han Dynasty once stayed here in a summer resort. During the Wei and Jin periods, the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove turned hermits in the bamboo grove at the Rock of A Hundred Houses, leaving behind them many places of historical interest.

　　漢獻(xiàn)帝劉協(xié)曾在此避暑納涼，魏晉時(shí)期，史稱“竹林七賢”的嵇康、劉伶、向秀、山濤等7位名士曾隱居百家?guī)r竹林20余年，留下多個(gè)遺跡。

　　The Zifang Lake. 子房湖

　　The Zifang Lake is also called the Ping Lake. Because General Zhang Liang of Han Dynasty once trained his soldiers on the hill top of the west valley and in his later life retired here.So people named the lake after his nick name Zifang.At the two sides of the lake, mountains stand with the green water in between.

　　子房湖又叫“平湖”。因漢代張良(字子房)曾站在溝谷西側(cè)的山峰上，日夜操練兵馬，幫助劉邦成就大業(yè)后又隱退到此而得名。兩岸青山對(duì)峙，夾著一帶綠水。

　　Yuntai Waterfall. 云臺(tái)天瀑

　　The Yuntai Waterfall runs at the deep end of Quanpu Canyon. The higher the mountain, the quicker waterfall. Being called the highest the waterfall in China, the waterfall tumbles from a height of 314 meters. Boating upstream, there're also other worth-seeing sites such as the Multi-source Spring, the Whispering Spring, the Quiet Pool and the Singing Dragon Waterfall.

　　位于泉瀑峽盡頭，峰高瀑急，落差314米，被稱為華夏第一高瀑。沿峽谷逆水而上，還有多孔泉、私語泉、幽潭、吟龍瀑等多個(gè)景點(diǎn)。
